Day 2 – Saturday January 12th – San Diego Local Touring
We’ll start the day across the San Diego Bay with a tour of Hotel Del Coronado… Built in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, Hotel del Coronado is an American treasure with more than a century of stories to tell. The Del’s visionary founders, Elisha Babcock, Jr., and Hampton L. Story, dreamed of building a seaside resort that would be “the talk of the Western world.” Since then, the resort has become a living legend visited by celebrities, dignitaries, and U.S. presidents. Next, enjoy some free time in historic Gaslamp Quarter where you can stretch your legs and grab some lunch. Afterward, we’ll continue our tour with a drive north of the city to admire the spectacular coastline of La Jolla, arguably the most picturesque part of the city. From dramatic ocean vistas to sweeping views from Mt Soledad, upscale La Jolla boasts a natural cove that is home to sea caves, cliffs, abundant marine life, and local kayakers. Hear about some of the area’s famous residents who are known to frequent the posh shopping and fine-dining district. After breakfast we’ll head to the USS Midway… Formerly the US Navy’s longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century (1945 to 1991), the USS Midway Museum comprises an entire floating city. Next enjoy a fun lunch in Old Town… Tacos, tequila, and tombstones… stroll at a leisurely pace, stopping at four top-rated eateries along the way. Sample a variety of authentic Mexican specialties… taste delicious tacos, salsas, and fresh tortillas made to order. You also get to sample cocktails made with tequila… the popular Mexican liquor that goes into margaritas and other classic drinks all while listening to live mariachi music. With Old Town’s long history, it has collected several ghost stories. Walk past adobe homes from the early 19th century to allegedly haunted spots, including El Campo Santo Cemetery and Whaley House, which “America’s Most Haunted” named the most haunted house in America. Admire the mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival building as your guide shares details of its spooky history. Our last stop of the day is at The Junípero Serra Museum… an iconic regional landmark. Located just above Old Town, the Serra sits on one of the most significant historical sites on the West Coast, the site of the first permanent European settlement in what is today the State of California.
