Fall into Ashland… The air is warm, the days long, the sunsets brighter, and the pastures are greener! This is our favorite time to visit our southern neighbors… the crowds of summer have gone, it’s lovely to sit outside day or evening, and the entertainment is wonderful, as always!
Day 1 – Tualatin, OR to Ashland, OR
South we go! First stop, LaVelle Winery… We start with a taste of their award winning wines that they love talking about! Don’t be afraid to ask questions, as they truly enjoy the opportunity to engage with all wine lovers from the first timer all the way to the most advanced wine connoisseur. Before we leave LaVelle, we will be treated to a delightful catered lunch! Our next stop is one of Southern Oregon’s finest wineries… Weisinger Winery… they are known for their varietal wines such as Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. Our home for the next two nights is the Historic Ashland Springs Hotel (formerly the Mark Antony)… It has been transformed into a haven of taste and elegance, reminiscent of small European hotels. You’ll have some time to freshen up before our delicious dinner at Harvey’s Place. Next OSF presents The Winter’s Tale on the Elizabethan Stage… King Leontes is blessed with a beautiful queen, a son and a baby daughter-to-be, but he loses them all when his mind becomes poisoned by jealousy. During the bleak spiritual winter that follows, faithful friends and a divine oracle slowly lead him back to sanity and a glorious reunion with those he lost. Director Desdemona Chiang will present it from an Asian and Asian-American perspective, setting it in dynastic China and America’s Old West. Ashland Springs Hotel (L, D)
Day 2 – Local Touring Ashland, OR
We’ll head to Jacksonville this morning for a unique guided tour of The Jacksonville Cemetery… the final resting place for many of the early “movers and shakers” of Jacksonville, and formerly known as Table Rock City. Those who now rest below the canopy of Madrone trees were merchants, gold miners, farmers, judges and doctors. Grave markers reflect the great distances they traveled seeking their fortunes and a better way of life. After we will enjoy some free time to treat ourselves to lunch and stroll in the quaint downtown before heading to one of our favorites… Valley View Winery… sitting on a hill overlooking the Apple Gate Valley. Take some time to soak up the view while we taste their delicious wines. Next it’s the Rogue Creamery, the Lillie Belle Candy Shop, & the Daisy Creek Wine Shop – it’s 3 stops in one, and lots of Fun! Enjoy award winning cheese, delicious chocolates, and the tasting room at Daisy Creek Winery. You’ll have some free time in Ashland… As Sunset magazine says of Ashland, “Where the town itself is the major attraction”. Now you’re primed for Oregon Cabaret Theatre, and wonderful Dinner Show, “Chicago”… In roaring twenties Chicago, Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap… until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal. The Kander and Ebb classic won six Tonys when it was revived on Broadway in 1997. Ashland Springs Hotel (B, D)
Day 3 – Ashland, OR to Tualatin, OR
We’ll head home the next morning, but the fun isn’t over. First stop; the Oregon Vortex House of Mystery, it gives us a glimpse into a strange world where the improbable is the commonplace and everyday physical facts are reversed. It is an area of naturally occurring visual and perceptual phenomena, which can be captured on film. No matter your education or profession you will find a challenge to all your accepted theories. Our farewell lunch will be one to remember as we’ll indulge in a wonderful catered lunch at Del Rio Vineyards and will be including a tasting… Cheers! (B,L)
