Charleston & Myrtle Beach – Dec. 4 – 10 2019

Charleston… Known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, distinguished restaurants, and hospitable people. It has received numerous accolades, including “America’s Most Friendly City and in 2013 and 2014 “the most polite and hospitable city in America” In 2016, Charleston was ranked the “World’s Best City”! Myrtle Beach… Take in a foot-stomping show at the Carolina Opry. Mingle with the fishermen of Springmaid Pier, then stop for ice cream along the boardwalk. Shop and dine at one of the area’s many entertainment complexes, or simply explore the many beaches of the Grand Strand – all with a personality of their own.

Day 1 – Wednesday December 4th – Home to Charleston  
Welcome to Charleston, South Carolina… dubbed the “Golden Town” it’s defined by cobblestone streets, pastel houses, and horse-drawn carriages, Charleston is famed for being one of America’s more aesthetically pleasing cities. Our home for the night is the Mill House Inn located in the heart of historic downtown Charleston. Mill House Inn   

Day 2 – Thursday December 5th – Charleston to Myrtle Beach
After breakfast we’ll take a carriage tour… we’ll not only see the highlights of Charleston’s past, but we’ll also delve further into the city and learn about areas not normally seen by typical tourists. All of Charleston’s beauty and charm are preserved due to strict preservation laws, and the suburbs of Old Charleston are a remarkable place to hear and witness the ever-unfolding history of the “Holy City”.You will have some free time for lunch and to take in the Historic Market… built in 1841 and designed by Edward B. White, it’s a National Historic Landmark. We’ll make our way up the coastline to Myrtle Beach this afternoon. Our home for the next three nights is the Double Tree by Hilton Oceanfront Resort. You will have some time to get cozy in your room before we head to dinner and a great show, Legends in Concert…  This international award-winning cast of accomplished tribute artists, talented singers and dancers, and a rockin’ band brings the music experience to life. Day 3 – Friday December 6th – Myrtle Beach – Local Touring
After a delicious breakfast at the hotel we’ll head to Patriots Point Naval Museum. It is a maritime museum on Charleston Harbor with the World War II aircraft carrier, USS YORKTOWN as its centerpiece. It’s also home to the Patriots Point Museum and a fleet of National Historic Landmark ships, the Cold War Memorial and the only Vietnam Experience Exhibit in the U.S. We will have a “VIP Behind the Scenes Tour”. You’ll have some free time on the boardwalk before we head to our next adventure. A happy hour cruise that take us through the waters of Murrells Inlet out to (but not in) the Atlantic Ocean… life is better on a boat! You’ll have some time to freshen up before we head to dinner at Wicked Tuna. Tonight, we’ll take in the Lights of a Thousand Candles at Brookgreen Gardens. The gardens come to life amid the soft glow of more than 4,500 hand-lit candles and countless sparkling lights. Walk the paths with a warm cup of cider, hear holiday music, carolers singing, and celebrate the season. Double Tree by Hilton (B, D) 

Day 4 – Saturday December 7th – Myrtle Beach – Local touring
Enjoy a free day to explore on your own… with over 60 miles of sand, sun and sparkling Atlantic Ocean. While a trip to the beach is a must, the fun extends beyond the shores to many other area activities and attractions. We’ll meet up early evening for dinner at the Chesapeake House before we take in the Carolina Opry Christmas Special…it’s often called “The Christmas Show of the South,” celebrating their 34th season of enchanting holiday performances. Gilmore works for months to create an unforgettable holiday experience, with his usual signature flair for production. The 2019 Christmas special brings stunning changes, beautifully blended with time-honored tradition to create a family experience that is second to none as new talent mingles with acclaimed rotating artists and long-standing Opry favorites. Day 5 – Sunday December 8th – Myrtle Beach to Charleston
We’ll head back to Charleston today with a few fun stops along the way! First the Rice Museum… in 1750, Georgetown was evolving into the center of rice production in the Carolina Colony. Five major river systems – the Waccamaw, the Pee Dee, the Black, the Sampit and the Santee – flowed through the county to the sea, allowing widespread use of the tidal-flow method of rice cultivation – a method that took advantage of the force exerted by the tides on fresh river water to direct the water into and out of the rice fields. Next enjoy lunch and tour at the Hopsewee Plantation… built circa 1740. Some 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, Hopsewee Plantation was one of the South’s major rice plantations and the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. You’ll have some time to rest up before we head to dinner at one of Charleston’s great restaurants.  Mill House Inn (B, D)

Day 6 – Monday December 9th – Charleston – Local Touring
 This morning we’ll head to Middleton Place… A National Historic Landmark, home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America and an enduring, vibrant, and essential part of the Charleston and American experience. We’ll tour the gardens and the South Flanker House/Museum. It is the only surviving portion of the three-building residential complex that once stood overlooking the Ashley River. We will hear essential, life-changing human stories. We’ll head back to the harbor where we’ll take a boat excursion to Fort Sumter… Learn about where the American Civil War began and Fort Sumter’s role from park rangers. Victorious over the Royal Navy in 1776 and scene of the largest patriot defeat in 1780 played a key role in the American Revolution. Your evening is free to explore this historic city on your own. Day 7 – Tuesday December 10th Charleston to Home
We’ll make our way home today with wonderful memories of the South. (B)
