California Coastal Splendor – April 19th – 24th 2020

Crashing waves, rolling fog, sheer rocky cliffs, and pleasant bends and curves make a trip along the California Coast one unforgettable experience… This is some of the most beautiful coastline in the world! After the stunning natural beauty of Big Sur, comes the former port of San Simeon and one of the most opulent houses ever built; Hearst Castle. Built between 1922 and 1947, it was the glamorous retreat of the media magnate William Randolph Hearst, who entertained famous movie stars and politicians here.

Day 1 – Sunday April 19th – Home to Monterey
Escape the Oregon winter to sunny California… We’ll fly non-stop to San Jose. Welcome to wine country and Clos LaChance Winery… Tucked into the beautiful Hayes Valley, Clos LaChance is a true wine country experience located only 30 minutes from the Silicon Valley. We’ll enjoy lunch and a tasting at this beautiful award-winning winery. We’ll make our way to Monterey and our home for the night… the Best Western Victorian Inn. Monterey was the capital of Alta during the 1700’s and 1800’s… you’ll will find historical influence of both Spain and Mexico here. Today it is famed for its artists, fishing and more. Your evening is free to explore, we are close to Cannery Row… full of shops, eateries and more! Best Western Victorian Inn (L)

Day 2 – Monday April 20th – Monterey to Morrow Bay
We’ll head south down beautiful Highway 1 today first Stop… Julia Burns State Park – Named after Julia Pfeiffer Burns, a well-respected pioneer rancher in the early 20th century, the park stretches from the Big Sur coastline into nearby 3,000-foot ridges, and home to 400 feet redwoods. A main feature of the park is McWay Falls, which drops 80 feet into the Pacific Ocean. Next enjoy Lunch and some spectacular views at Coast Big Sur Restaurant in Big Sur. Perched high above the Pacific with view of the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains, this restaurant has been a mecca of poets, artists, travelers and vagabonds. We’ll continue down beautiful Highway 1 to our home for the next two nights, the Blue Sail Inn, Morrow Bay… situated on a bluff that overlooks Morro Rock and the Embarcadero, Blue Sail Inn offers incomparable views, along with a premier location near all the top local attractions. Tonight, enjoy a wonderful dinner cruise about the Chablis… a unique, 50-foot, two-story riverboat that graces the gentle waters of beautiful Morro Bay Harbor. Day 3 – Tuesday April 21st – Morrow Bay Local Touring
Welcome to Hearst Castle, a National Historic Landmark! William Randolph Hearst told architect Julia Morgan that he wanted to build “a little something” on the California Coast… A 165-room Moorish castle with 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways, furnished with Spanish and Italian antiques and art, flanked by three large guest houses! In its heyday, Hearst Castle had a zoo, tennis courts and two magnificent swimming pools. Over the years many famous guests visited Hearst Castle, including Lionel and John Barrymore, Ralph Bellamy, Charlie Chaplin, Gary Cooper Joan Crawford & More! We’ll indulge in a wonderful lunch here before we head San Luis Obispo, named the “happiest city in America”. We’ll take in some of California’s heritage at to one of California’s most beautiful missions, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the fifth California mission founded by Father Junipero Serra, Sept. 1, 1772. It was named after Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse, France. You’ll have some free time to enjoy San Luis Obispo’s Old Town… with tree-lined streets and handsome, traditional Spanish-style buildings. We’ll head back to Morrow Bay where your evening is free to explore the shops and eateries. Blue Sail Inn (B, L)

Day 4  Wednesday April 22nd – Morrow Bay to San Francisco
After breakfast we’ll head to everyone’s favorite city, you know, the “city by the bay”; San Francisco! First stop, San Juan Bautista for lunch and some free time… Rich with culture and history, it offers a small-town atmosphere filled with the charm and character of the past. Our home for the next two nights is the Hotel Zephyr Fisherman’s Warf… with its playful personality, this  waterfront property features a great location… just steps away from Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square and the Alcatraz ferry landing and is close to many convenient transportation options, including the famed San Francisco cable cars. Settle in and relax before a welcome dinner at one of Pier 39’s wonderful restaurants. Hotel Zephyr (B, D)

Day 5  Thursday April 23rd – San Francisco Free Day
Meet our wonderful step on guide who will show us the sights and give you suggestions on how to spend your free afternoon and evening. Explore Fisherman’s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Union Square, Chinatown, Alcatraz, Angel Island, museums, galleries, and more! Hotel Zephyr (B)

Day 6  Friday April 24th – San Francisco to Home
We’ll head home today with fabulous memories of the California Coast (B)
